Module 3. Decision-Making & Things to Consider

The ‘Invest In Me’ process is intended as both a learning opportunity for the young person, but also aids the Transition Coach to have an objective and consistent approach to funding. Invest In Me is more structured rather than a discretionary approach to funding and is further intended to support equity for all young people accessing funding through Home Stretch WA.

Considering the Young Person's Context with Reflective Questions

When a young person makes a request to the Invest In Me Fund a number of Reflective Questions need to be considered with the young person. The video below outlines these questions.

  • For each Case Study below, consider how you would respond to the young person's request.

  • Use the Reflective Questions outlined in the video above to develop your response.

1. Case Study - Amy

Amy is experiencing homelessness keeps losing her mobile phone, or having it stolen.  Her Centrelink also keeps getting cut off and you have no way of contacting her outside of messenger.

2. Case Study - Leroy

Leroy needs help to start paying off a range of debts that are impacting his ability to move forward in his life.  The debts are due to accidental property damage that was done by family members who were living in his community housing provider property.

3. Case Study - Alex

Alex wants to use her Invest in Me to outfit her private rental, to buy furniture and other household appliances. The total cost is going to be over $2500. Whilst she has the money to afford to cover the total costs, she wants to have money in her savings and to be able to use that a safety net.

4. Case Study - Jay

Jay wishes to have their Invest in Me withdrawn for a cash buy, they wish for you to give them the entire amount saying that they want to buy a car in cash. They say that they will chuck in for the other half.

What Chucking-In Meant for Me 

Chucking or chipping-in can be difficult to introduce as an idea, particularly when young people might have experienced a system that reacts to their need, rather than invests in their development.

The video below is of a young person who participated in Home Stretch WA and was supported by their coach to access Invest In Me Funds, as well as chuck-in their own funds when they could afford it. They talk about what that meant for them.
